Phil Wisdom began writing songs in 2002, and started jamming with people and playing some shows under the name Butterknife in 2004.
Kieran Stone and Tim McCarthy (both ex-Manchaug) joined the band the following year. They responded to a Craigslist ad and showed up to the rehearsal space, case of beer in hand. When asked what song they wanted to start with, they cheerily said, "Oh, we haven't heard a note of your music." Apparently no one thought to send them any. Thankfully, that initial jam went well.
Jim Theodore (ex-Black Market Medallions, ex-Moonshot) joined in 2006 when his former band finally called it a day. The sound of Butterknife evolved rapidly as the band began writing as a group.
The debut album onetworeadygo. was released in 2010 to positive reviews, and the band received enthusiastic responses to their live shows. Tim took a break from the band, and Butterknife continued on as a trio.
The band recorded a new EP entitled Do the Needful, which will be released in January of 2012 for free at their website and on Bandcamp.
